"Mr. Koulikov examines the level of coverage that articles originally published in law reviews receive in eight major general academic databases. His findings are very similar to those of other discipline-specific database coverage studies, and reveal that coverage varies widely by database, regardless of the database's claim to cover legal periodicals. This has particular implications for the level of engagement that nonlegal scholars have with the literature of the legal academia, and for...

EXTRAIT - Since I first became involved with the activities of UNCITRAL’s Working Group VI, I have speculated several times in print about the multiple dimensions of transnational secured transactions reform, and about the role of different policy instruments in achieving legal modernization and harmonization. 2 I do not propose to review those speculations here. Rather, I mean to focus on two specific questions: should UNCITRAL now undertake a project to transform the recommendations of the...

Automated semantic indexing may be the answer to insufficient recallof legal information systems. The semantic web has created powerful toolsfor mark-up and ontological representation. Re-use in legal applications remainslow due to inappropriate knowledge structuring and lack of automatedknowledge acquisition. This paper describes the state of the art and proposes adynamic electronic legal commentary.

In 2002 Sweet & Maxwell began a long term project to apply a controlled vocabulary to their products, both in print and online. This vocabulary is essentially a thesaurus, structured on the principles of facet analysis, called the Legal Taxonomy. Sweet & Maxwell produce a wide range of legal publications that attempt to cover the gamut of a lawyer’s information sources. As everybody working in legal information knows, very few of a lawyer’s information needs will be met by reference to just...

"The history and theory of human textual indexing are surveyed. Basic terms are defined, the extent of the literature is discussed, and key concepts are explained, with an emphasis on thesaurus-based indexing. A section on the consistency of human indexing leads into a discussion of automatic indexing algorithms. An assessment of the future of human indexing concludes the entry. Pages from an early printed index and a manuscript index illustrate the structural elements of index entries as well as features of the format of early indexes that are still found in contemporary publications."

The Probabilistic Relevance Framework (PRF) is a formal framework for document retrieval, grounded in work done in the 1970–1980s, which led to the development of one of the most successful text-retrieval algorithms, BM25. In recent years, research in the PRF has yielded new retrieval models capable of taking into account document meta-data (especially structure and link-graph information). Again, this has led to one of the most successful Web-search and corporate-search algorithms, BM25F....

In this paper, we report ongoing efforts in a large scale research project to develop methods for profiling individual Web search engine users by leveraging data recorded in the transaction logs of search engines. Our research aim is to investigate how completely one can profile a Web searcher using log data. Taking a broad brush approach, we present an array of profiling attributes to illustrate the spectrum of user characteristics possible from log data. Specifically, we present ongoing...
