The identification of the user’s intention or interest through queries that they submit to a search engine can be very useful to offer them more adequate results. In this work we present a framework for the identification of user’s interest in an automatic way, based on the analysis of query logs. This identification is made from two perspectives, the objectives or goals of a user and the categories in which these aims are situated. A manual classification of the queries was made in order to...

Automatically generated web search result categories were found to be beneficial in our previous study. In that study, we used 15 result categories and left the optimal number of categories issue deliberately untouched. To address this matter, we conducted a new experiment with 27 participants to compare search user interfaces with 10, 20, and 40 automatically generated categories. The results show that users prefer fewer categories. The use of fewer categories results in a slightly more...

Although interactive query reformulation has been actively studied in the laboratory, little is known about the actual behavior of web searchers who are offered terminological feedback along with their search results. We analyze log sessions for two groups of users interacting with variants of the AltaVista search engine - a baseline group given no terminological feedback and a feedback group to whom twelve refinement terms are offered along with the search results. We examine uptake,...

In this paper, we propose a query-categorization approach to facilitating the engineering process of constructing Web taxonomies. One primary step in taxonomy construction is to acquire the domain-specific terminology terms and the mapping between the subjects and these terms. We introduce a technique for categorizing Web query terms from the logs of on-line search services into a predefined subject taxonomy based on their supposed popular search interests. The obtained experimental results...

Classic IR (information retrieval) is inherently predicated on users searching for information, the so-called "information need". But the need behind a web search is often not informational -- it might be navigational (give me the url of the site I want to reach) or transactional (show me sites where I can perform a certain transaction, e.g. shop, download a file, or find a map). We explore this taxonomy of web searches and discuss how global search engines evolved to deal with web-specific needs.

Subject content analysis of Web query terms is essential to understand Web searching interests. Such analysis includes exploring search topics and observing changes in their frequency distributions with time. To provide a basis for in-depth analysis of users' search interests on a larger scale, this article presents a query categorization approach to automatically classifying Web query terms into broad subject categories. Because a query is short in length and simple in structure, its...

Discussion of terms and how they are used in queries in information retrieval focuses on a transaction log analysis of queries posed on an Internet search service that isolated basic query structure syntactic patterns. Describes a linguistic model that classified Web queries and suggests implications for information retrieval system design. (Contains 9 references.) (Author/LRW)

We analyzed transaction logs containing 51,473 queries posed by 18,113 users of Excite, a major Internet search service. We provide data on: (i) sessions — changes in queries during a session, number of pages viewed, and use of relevance feedback; (ii) queries — the number of search terms, and the use of logic and modifiers; and (iii) terms — their rank/frequency distribution and the most highly used search terms. We then shift the focus of analysis from the query to the user to gain insight...

Digital Libraries (DLs) is a recent term used to refer to information systems (IS) and services that provide electronic documents-text files, digital sound, digital video-available in dynamic or archival repositories. Some insist that DLs refer to documentary collections that are accessed via the Internet, while others refer to DLs as any collection of electronic text, sound, or video files used in a shared space. There is much at stake in these debates. If DLs are narrowly defined, then we...
