S.R. Ranganathan is credited with the introduction of the term facet in the field of knowledge organization, towards the middle of the Twentieth century. Facets have traditionally been used to organize document collections and to express complex subjects. In the digital world, they act as filters to facilitate navigation and improve retrieval. But the popularity of the term does not mean that a definitive characterization of the concept has been established. Indeed, several...

The Classification Research Group manifesto of 1955, 'Faceted classification as the basis of all information retrieval', has been at least in part achieved, and there is much evidence of faceted classification influencing a whole range of modern information retrieval tools. This paper examines the theory underlying faceted classification, how and why it has been taken up so widely, and what benefits it brings to the activity of knowledge organization. The role of facet analysis as a general...

Vanda Broughton describes the methodology of constructing a thesaurus from a faceted classification for law (Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd ed. Class S). The structure of the classification is described, and the way in which the thesaural relationships are derived from this is demonstrated. Recent work to automate the process, using the encoded classification data used for the schedule display and alphabetical index, is explained. Examples of the way in which this functions are...

Faceted browsing is a common feature of new library catalog interfaces. But to what extent does it improve user performance in searching within today’s library catalog systems? This article reviews the literature for user studies involving faceted browsing and user studies of “next-generation” library catalogs that incorporate faceted browsing. Both the results and the methods of these studies are analyzed by asking, What do we currently know about faceted browsing? How can we design better...

In 2002 Sweet & Maxwell began a long term project to apply a controlled vocabulary to their products, both in print and online. This vocabulary is essentially a thesaurus, structured on the principles of facet analysis, called the Legal Taxonomy. Sweet & Maxwell produce a wide range of legal publications that attempt to cover the gamut of a lawyer’s information sources. As everybody working in legal information knows, very few of a lawyer’s information needs will be met by reference to just...

Purpose – This paper aims to provide an overview of principles and procedures involved in creating a faceted classification scheme for use in resource discovery in an online environment. Design/methodology/approach – Facet analysis provides an established rigorous methodology for the conceptual organization of a subject field, and the structuring of an associated classification or controlled vocabulary. This paper explains how that methodology was applied to the humanities in the FATKS...

Purpose – The aim of this article is to estimate the impact of faceted classification and the faceted analytical method on the development of various information retrieval tools over the latter part of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Design/methodology/approach – The article presents an examination of various subject access tools intended for retrieval of both print and digital materials to determine whether they exhibit features of faceted systems. Some attention is paid to...

Recent years have seen a proliferation of sources of information available to the lawyer. This article describes one publisher’s efforts to provide a more effective means of accessing information across the range of media available. It outlines the development of a controlled vocabulary and its application to both electronic and printed indexes.

"Professor Leiter reminds readers of the first principles of librarianship as enunciated by S.R. Ranganathan, the great Indian library theorist, and explores their meaning for law libraries in the digital age."

The library classification scheme was the first means of subject access to information, but is largely disregarded as a tool for the management of electronic resources ; modern classifications built on facet analytical principles are more appropriate to this purpose than is generally realized. Faceted classifications as exemplified by Bliss Bibliographical Classification (BC2) are powerful tools for the management of vocabulary, characterized by a rigorous analytical approach to terms, and...

Basic skills of classification and subject indexing lhavc been little taught in British library schools since automation was introduced into libraries. However, development of the Internet as a major mcdium of publication has stretched the capacity of search engines to cope with rctrieval. Consequently, there has been interest in applying existing systems of knowledge organization to clcctronic resources. Unfortunately, the classification systems havc been adopted without a full...

The line between classification and knowledge is explored. Classification schemes have properties that enable the representation of entities and relationships in structures that reflect knowledge of the domain being classified. The strengths and limitations of four classificatory approaches are described in terms of their ability to reflect, discover, and create new knowledge. These approaches are hierarchies, trees, paradigms, and faceted analysis. Examples are provided of the way in which knowledge and the classification process affect each other.

- ES
